I found this to be an interesting book because it gives a little more of a look into Jake's past.

This book starts out with Jake still working on her beloved fixer-upper in Maine and looking forward to the 4th of July celebration when odd emails and a strange man on a bike start harassing her.
The man seems familiar but she just can't place him.
As things become more intense, Jake knows the police aren't going to be able to help so she and her family decide to take matters into their own hands.
When things go wrong, Jake has to figure out how to get away from the madman.

One of the questions I had was one brought up at the end. Was Jake really the cause for Steven's father being murdered by the mob? Or did Steven Sr fake his death?

Always pay attention to Tiptree's tips at start of chapters. Always helpful even if you're not a diy er

Not even a mystery at all. For the past several books this series has been leaning more towards suspense and this book is all the way there. This is not a good thing in my opinion.I waited for this book to come out in paperback so it would be cheaper and I am glad I did. The plot is moribund and boring. it is basically a two character book as all the well loved supporting cast of characters are mere shadows of their former selves. The antagonist is hateful as I suppose he should be but all the words wasted on describing him and his actions and motivations are just that, a waste and not interesting reading. The narrative is so leaden that I found myself skipping whole pages just to get through the book. With each successive book Jake's intelligence level drops so; that it is difficult to believe that she could ever have been a financial adviser to the Mob. I was not rooting for Jake to survive this book. I really had no interest in the outcome. It is highly unlikely that I will purchase the next book in the series.
I was looking for a nice cozy mystery but this is not one of those. It definitely held my interest and kept me in suspense right up to the end.
I really like the Sarah Graves mysteries. They are set in Maine - always a plus with me. She has a nice family - not without their problems. She is remodeling a "fixer-upper," and I can identify.

This novel and another recent one have gone from cozy to thriller. This is not my favorite genre. Jacobia Tiptree is the protagonist. There is a homicidal lunatic in this one, and he seems to be smarter than she is. She escapes mainly through luck. I would rather see her find a burglar with no murder involved than deal with a homicidal maniac and sheer luck.
I’ve read all of the books up until this one, but the series starts to fall apart after the 10th or 11th book, when the writing changes from first to third person and a lot of inconsistencies start showing up. This one just tipped me over the edge, and I don’t plan to finish the series. It’s a shame, because I really enjoyed the first ten books.
This 12th entry in the series opens with Jacobia ("Jake") Tiptree tackling yet another home repair project as the town of Eastport prepares for its annual 4th of July celebration. When a young man begins to harass Jake by making bizarre and threatening remarks, she's annoyed and puzzled but not overly concerned - not at first. But as the stranger grows bolder and the threats more menacing, Jake realizes that there is nothing random about these attacks. Jake's past is coming back to haunt her, and if the "stranger" has his way revenge will be swift - and fatal.

I wasn't crazy about this installment, in large part because it seemed like I'd read it before. How many times can your house catch fire? Haven't we already seen Jake trapped in a basement while a madman enacts an elaborate murder scenario? Hasn't Wade left Jake alone and vulnerable in dangerous situations more than once (it happens twice in this story). And let's be honest - how many times will every single member of Jake's household find some excuse to leave her "conveniently" alone in the house so that some madman can make his move? Sorry, I just didn't buy into much of this story. The book relied too heavily on coincidence and convenient plot devices at every turn and it felt forced.

Most of the Eastport familiar faces do make an appearance, and I was glad for that (although none really play an essential role in the story). The town itself is featured prominently providing that nice local "flavor" that has been a hallmark of this series.

With the last few entries this series has definitely moved out of the "cozy" category, and I'm fine with that. I trust the author to know when it's time for a new approach to keep the series fresh. However, where a "cozy" can rely heavily on the domestic details to carry the story along, a mystery/thriller can not. If it's going to be dark and heavy then I need a plausible mystery and a convincing plot. A protagonist that is repeatedly going to put herself in dangerous situations - walking alone at night, hiking in a deserted area, searching empty houses for a psycho - is just not going to cut it.

If you are new to the series I don't think that this is the place to start. The first book is The Dead Cat Bounce A Home Repair is Homicide Mystery. While I didn't care for this particular entry, the series as a whole is entertaining and a "must" if you like stories set in Maine or live in a charming older home (aka "money pit"); the DIY scenes are hysterically accurate!
I've read several in this series. This is my least favorite. It's a fear fest from beginning to end. And Jake does one stupid thing after another.
When the series first began Jake Tiptree seemed like a really smart woman. I have enjoyed all the books until this one...This book was so stupid, I couldn't even finish it. Can you imagine, her husband, son, father and best friend all leave her at home alone when a person who wants to kill her is on the loose? Next she parades about town hoping the killer will find her, and when there is an explosion, again all the men in her life leave her stranded...if Wade were such an excellent husband he would have taken her with him in order to keep her safe. I tried to finish this book for three weeks and just didn't care anymore. This series of books has really gone downhill. I purchase the next book in the series but I won't read that either since the premise is that she takes off for the woods all by herself when a convict she knows has excaped from prision is roaming the area...I am so disappointed.
