What they said.

Seriously, I can't believe so many people wrote what I was going to say! This is one of those books you will want to read many times. I'm on #4 but it's the first time on Kindle. I am an English history buff, and reading Katherine was like nirvana! It even helped me when I got to college and took English History for a grade! I remember so much more from this novel than from any history book!
It is the most romantic, obstacle ridden love story I have ever read, with the possible exception of Scarlett and Rhett. It is long book but you won't want it to end. I spent many a night reading my aunt's hard copy by flashlight under the covers back when I was a teen with a bedtime!
It's set during the time of Edward III, and against the backdrop of the Wars of the Roses that followed his death. History books will mention the importance of John of Gaunt in being the progenitor or the Tudors, through his Beaufort daughter. Katherine is rarely mentioned, other than as his mistress. This is her story. Meticulously researched and written in a style that brings the history alive!, it is compelling as any I've ever read. world lost a true talent when Anya Seton left it.

Katherine Anya Seton 9780340839881 Books Reviews

The author, Anya Seton, was good at details and did her history homework mostly abroad for this one. And well she should since it took place during the 14th Century in England. But likely it is me but some of her elaborate details became tedious for me. I suppose as romantic historical fiction goes she is tops of her era (1940's) especially in describing characters, scenes, and events. And her depiction of the events does paint a good picture of how different groups functioned at that time. Since it was based on history she does stretch the facts somewhat; but then since it is fiction she has the freedom to do just that. But the affair between protagonists, Katherine, a commoner orphaned at a young age, and John, Duke of Lancaster, son of Edward and uncle to Richard III , both kings of England. seemed to me to be unnecessarily stretched out at times like she was using a kind of shock appeal to an immature and teenage girl's audience of the 1940's. LIkely she was but by today's cultural standards and perspective not so shocking, nor very subtle. Forbidden sex was just a big deal back then. The ending was predictable from a fictional stand point, but very unique from an historical perspective. That alone makes it a worthwhile read if you can take the time. I thought the audible reading was done very well. (All of those accents) I combined the sound with kindle and this meant I could listen while I cooked or did other things. But when I wanted to read especially in bed..I used the book view and sometimes both. Ah, recent technology gives us more than one way to do things. That's nice!
Excellent classic historical fiction begins with a difficult-to-define diction that is able to mimic the period without being cloying, or just plain difficult to understand. "Katherine" manages this feat while it broadens into a clear view of the most basic and yet global drawing of the setting in time and space. "Katherine" reigns supreme in these aspects of this genre, even allowing readers to "feel" what distances meant to a woman--getting to the next town on a cart's straw or on horseback trying to balance with the complicated clothing of the period.

Her description of the hovels, castles, ascetic religious dwellings and every sort of place people live even lets us SMELL what the average traveler might experience in a local tavern, whether on a roadside in the country or a close, dark establishment in Greater London, or the horrific fires started by the revolt of the outraged common folk that burnt up so many marvelous castles and noble residences.

Following the twists and turns of actual British history. this novel takes on a story that required unusually difficult research, taking place in the 14th century. Ms Seton has done a masterful job of capturing what must have been some of the feelings of a passionate love affair of that time, including the frustrations of a class society that allowed men to have affairs, but saw women in that position as whores, whose children were forever bastards, lacking the ability to improve their status. The period is a very rich one to mine, and Ms. Seton has done so very effectively, supplying readers with a fascinating picture of the politics, interpersonal relationships of the many distinct classes of people who interacted at that time, including an author still read today, Geoffrey Chaucer, who is a character within the novel.

Even after six decades, this fiction stands up pretty well to critical scruitany, and our book discussion group thoroughly enjoyed the book and the discussion of it.

It's not a quick read, but it is a very rewarding one. This reader had trouble putting it down.
Anya Seton wrote two historical novels with English settings. Katherine is set in the time of Edward III and gives an excellent background for the lead up to the War of the Roses. Katherine Swynford is one of the most remarkable women in history. She is ancestor to both sides of the war of the roses and managed to survive and thrive in a man's world. Anya Seton puts lots of romance in her novels and does it well. She never puts in any false history for the sake of the story. Consequently, when you are done with the book, you are really prepared to understand the period of history covered by the book. I am an English history buff and already knew most of the history in and around this time but Anya Seton fill in the blanks in a very entertaining way, and it makes you remember and understand the major events of the time. It's a really great read.
